Dele disse Mark Twain: “Este celebrado pequeno livro de frases nunca morrerá enquanto perdurar a lingua inglesa... é perfeito...a sua imortalidade está assegurada.”. Este opus magnum dos guias de conversação em lingua estrangeira (neste particular, inglês para portugueses), da autoria de José da Fonseca e Pedro Carolino, foi editado em Paris em 1855 e é um injustamente esquecido percursor das tão peculiares incursões lusas na originalidade das intervenções culturais, sociais ou tecnológicas (basta lembrar Natália de Andrade, Alves dos Reis e as mamografias por satélite). Ainda hoje objecto de rebuscados ensaios, alguns dos seus exemplos constituem verdadeiros enigmas para os estudiosos anglo-saxónicos, incapazes de decifrar o alcance dos seus profundos sentidos.
Pequeno teste de interpretação de ditos e provérbios:

A secção que sugere a comunicação com um barbeiro britânico é igualmente notável:

- Shave-me!

Bem como as instruções para se fazer entender na pesca (rebuscadamente eruditas, shakespereanas mesmo), de antologia:

- That pond it seems me multiplied of fishes. Let us amuse rather to the fishing.
- Here, there is a wand and some hooks.
- Silence! There is a superb perch! Give me quick the rod. Ah! There is, it is a lamprey.
- You mistake you, it is a frog! Dip again it in the water.
